Minute by Minute marked a stylistic shift for The Doobie Brothers as the group leaned further into smooth rock, soul, and jazz-influenced arrangements following the arrival of keyboardist and vocalist Michael McDonald. The album became the band’s most commercially successful release, winning multiple Grammy Awards and producing the massive hit “What a Fool Believes,” written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. The song’s sophisticated chord progressions and soulful delivery helped define the late-1970s West Coast soft-rock sound.
