Early Soccer Ball w/ the letters HU for Howard or Hampton?? hand carved into the leather. Constructed from thick brown leather with exposed hand-laced closure and stitched paneling. The surface shows pronounced wear. The ball holds a slightly irregular round, resting heavy and grounded.
The leather is dense and tactile, with visible grain variation and softened edges where hands repeatedly met the surface. Lacing remains intact, reinforcing both structure and period accuracy.
Why leather?:
Before synthetic rubber, basketballs were made from leather because it was durable, repairable, and widely available. Leather could be stitched, relaced, and reconditioned, allowing the ball to evolve alongside the game itself. The weight and grip demanded control and intention—qualities embedded in early play.
